Area of expertise: Open Education practices – expanding learning beyond the walls of a classroom

  • Real learning happens when we are doing – collaborating, exploring, questioning

Open Learning Design Intervention: how to expand learning in high schools using OEP

  • Problem: what – learning happens everywhere
  • What: k-12 students have the opportunity to access people, content and ideas that were previously inaccessible

Learning is learning

  • It’s about access to those learning opportunities for students
  • Creating spaces where kids can be creative and innovative over and over – to do that develop digital literacies to help build personal learning networks
  • There are stages in open learning design intervention
    • Stage 1: Building relationships
      • Learning can’t happen without building relationships – interactions and connections with others. Find out who students really are – doing prior assessment and what they know, and how you can best support their access to learning
    • Stage 2: co-designing learning pathways
    • Stage 3: Building and sharing knowledge
    • Stage 4: building their own personal learning network (PLNs)

Expanding open education practices in high school learning environments: classroom -> community -> networks

  • PL1: How do I search and communicate online?
  • PL2: Who is my online audience?
  • PL3: How do I solve a community problem?
  • PL4: What is my story and how does my story inform my identity?
